New York City - World Trade Center Site Memorial Ceremony and Remembrance

Date: September 11, 2010
Time: 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

This is the official New York City observance of the anniversary of 9/11 and the event will take place at the World Trade Center site on the morning of Saturday, September 11th.

New York City - 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial Annual Floating Lanterns Ceremony

Date: September 11, 2010
Location: Pier 40 at West Houston Street and the Hudson River

As part of the ceremony, a piano that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima will be played in concert.  This piano is being brought from Japan by Hiroshima resident Munefumi Takemoto to serve as a testament to peace and the immortal spirit.  This event is free and open to the public.

The September Concerts

Date: September 10 - 12, 2010

The September Concerts are a series of free concerts held in locations around New York City and around the world to fill the skies with music and celebrate peace and humanity through music every September 11th.  The September Concert was born in 2002 as a small, local grassroots effort and has steadily evolved to be an event of global proportion with a mission to promote global peace.  In 2010, the 9th Annual September Concert will be held over three days, September 10th – 12th.  Anyone can participate by organizing, performing in, volunteering at or attending a concert.  More information can be found at www.septemberconcert.org.

Our Lady of the Airways Chapel at Boston Logan International will offer a service of remembrance on September 11th. The chapel is located between Terminals C (United) and B (American) on the ground/street level.  Please call 617-567-2800 for times of service.

The Boston Logan International Airport 9/11 Memorial near the Hilton Hotel is open to the public 24/7. It is a magnificent structure with a reflection path and can be accessed by taking the Hilton courtesy shuttle to the hotel or walking through the parking garage to the hotel from Terminal C. The Hilton courtesy shuttle also stops at the airport subway station.

Hermosa Beach, CA 9/11 Memorial Dedication Ceremony on 9/11/10

AFA LAX Council 12 (United Airlines) and APFA LAX (American Airlines Flight Attendants) will be participating in the Hermosa Beach 9/11 Memorial Ceremony. The memorial bench will include AA and UA pilot and flight attendant wings within the memorial. AFA LAX Council 12 President Darren Shiroma is a scheduled to speak on behalf of AA and UA crewmembers lost on 9/11. Scheduled to perform are David Elliott (son of Dionne Warwick), and AFA LAX Council Member Liz Nash. 

September 11 National Day of Service

On April 21, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act which establishes September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.  This is a day to honor the victims and volunteer with members of your community to determine the most appropriate way to commemorate this day.  Encourage citizens who volunteer to register their service on the My Good Deed website at www.mygooddeed.org.

Throughout the month of September, Americans will coordinate in somber remembrance of the terrorist attacks of 2001.  As a result, citizens will be thinking more about keeping their communities safe.  Visit www.citizencorps.gov for more ideas and information on what others are doing to recognize this day.

VOICES Day of Remembrance Benefit

Location: New York Stock Exchange, 11 Wall Street #7 New York, NY

The VOICES Day of Remembrance Benefit will be held at the New York Stock Exchange and will begin with the ringing of the NYSE Closing Bell by VOICES.  There is a cost of $150 per person for the cocktail reception that will follow.  The Day of Remembrance is intended to honor those who perished and to support the ongoing needs of the 9/11 community.  RSVP is required by September 1st at www.voicesofsept11.org.

Flight 93 National Memorial – Shanksville, Pennsylvania

The Ninth Anniversary Commemorative Service will take place on Saturday morning, September 11, 2010, a short distance from the crash site off Lambertsville Road near Shanksville, Pennsylvania beginning at 9:30 AM.  First Lady Michelle Obama and Mrs. Laura Bush will be keynote speakers.  Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Governor Ed Rendell will also attend.  The ceremony will honor the 40 passengers and crew of United flight 93, along with all of those lost on September 11, 2001.

Garden of Reflection - Yardley, Pennsylvania

On the morning of September 11th a special Memorial Service will be held at the Garden of Reflection. All are invited to attend this service marking the anniversary.

The ceremony will begin at 8:46a.m. with the ringing of a fire bell marking the chronological events when the four attacks took place. Interfaith prayers will be offered by religious leaders after each moment is remembered. Our Tribute Flag will be lowered to half mast and our Bucks County Residents names will be read while a flower is placed. A presentation of our Memorial Wreath to honor all 2973 victims of the attacks will be laid concluding our ceremony at approximately 10:10a.m.

The Garden of Reflection with its twin towering fountains is located at Memorial Park 1950 Woodside Road in Yardley, Pennsylvania. The Memorial is open throughout the day and into the evening, allowing for visitors to take private time to reflect. Flowers will be available for all to place in remembrance.

Ride Route to Support Flight 93 National Memorial

The Flight 93 National Memorial is taking shape in the field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania - 2,200 pastoral acres that have become sacred ground. Due for dedication on the 10th anniversary of 9/11/01, the first phase of its construction requires $30 million in public donations. Long Beach – Remember September 11th, 2001 “The Ride” 2010

There will be a motorcycle ride leaving at 12:15 pm from So. Orange County to the ceremony at 3:00 pm.  The ceremony will include various speakers and is dedicated to the memory of the 343 FDNY Firemen, 61 Police Officers and all those who tragically lost their lives on that historic day.  The goal is to draw Patriotic Americans together on a Remembrance Ride to honor these brave Americans.  The “Ride” is open to anyone with a bike.  The public ceremony is open to all.  More information may be found at http://www.remember911ride.com/pagetwo.html?1114909746828

New Jersey Shore - 9-11 Memorial Run

Location: The Belmar boardwalk on 16th Avenue

Runners from the Jersey Shore will participate in the annual 9-11 Remembrance Run along the boardwalks of Belmar and Spring Lake, New Jersey.  “Run, Remember, Reflect and Resume” is the theme of the evening.  Runners are instructed to “Run” in complete silence along the route.  At the start, a portion of those lost on that tragic day from the Jersey Shore are read aloud by the runners to “Remember” those lost.  They then proceed to the 9-11 Memorial in Spring Lake where some of the flags and flowers are placed around the memorial and another portion of the names of victims are read again.  From there the runners proceed to the end of the Spring Lake Boardwalk and while they “Run” they “Reflect” on the significance of that event on our nation and our lives.  After a final moment of silence the runners are instructed to “Resume” their lives and return back to the start.

Phoenix Freedom Walk – Remembering 9-11

Join city dignitaries and special guests for entertainment and a one mile walk around the park lake.  There will be a free concert inside the Memorial Hall.  Registration begins at 10:15.

San Diego - Memorial Service

Date: September 11, 2010
Time: 2:30 pm

There will be a September 11th service held aboard the flight deck of the USS Midway in San Diego’s Navy Pier.  This service will serve to remember those lost on September 11, 2001. Names of the United & American Airlines crewmembers lost on 9/11, along with Fire, Police, and Port Authority personnel lost will be read at the annual memorial tribute aboard the USS Midway at the San Diego Navy Pier. This event will take place on Saturday, September 11, 2010.

This annual memorial tribute is hosted by the FDNY Retirees of California with AFA-CWA participation, and will include Presentation of the Colors, Pipes & Drums, Honor Guards from the San Diego FD, Helicopter Flyover, 21 Gun Salute, Orange County FD, US Marine Corps, US Border Patrol, the Singing of the Star Spangled Banner, Taps and the reading of the names.  Vicki Jurgens, MEC Safety, Health and Security Chairperson, is coordinating our involvement in the event.  Please RSVP by sending an e-mail to Vicki at safety@unitedafa.org.  Include in the e-mail your name, contact number and e-mail.  Also indicate if you are willing to participate in reading the names of our heroes. All crewmembers are encouraged to attend in full uniform.

Tempe - 9-11 Healing Field

Date: September 10-12, 2010
Time: 8:00 am – 11:00 pm
Location: Healing Field at Tempe Town Lake

Join community leaders, neighbors and friends for a touching walk through the flags and attend the annual program of speakers, memorial service and a candlelight vigil.

The City of Tempe and Tempe Exchange will host a memorial tribute to our September 11th heroes.  The city is coordinating the event with AFA US Airways-West Council 66.  Flight Attendants and pilots will be honored as first responders at the ceremony on the evening of September 11th, and all crew are encouraged to attend in uniform.  A Healing Field will be in place at Tempe Town Lake Park throughout the weekend, from the evening of September 10th through the morning of September 13th.  The Healing Field welcomes all visitors for remembrance and quiet reflection on the events that changed our career and our world forever, the events that defied the intensions of those who wished to inflict harm but instead encouraged the incredible human spirit of compassion, love and heroism.  A flyover will take place at 5:45 am on September 11th, the same time the first flight struck the Twin Towers.  That evening, a ceremony will honor our heroes, beginning at 7 pm, on the main stage in Tempe Town Lake Park.  View the flyer from AFA Council 66 for more details.

Washington, DC - 9th Annual Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff September 11th Memorial 5K Run

Location: The Crystal City Doubletree Hotel

There will be a commemorative run to honor victims of September 11. The race has raised over $300,000 for 9/11 related charities which now focus on various military related causes.  This is an event for the entire family.  More information can be found at www.arlington911race.com.

West Chester University will dedicate a statue to Michael Horrocks

West Chester University will dedicate a statue to Michael Horrocks, flight 175 First Officer, on Saturday, September 11th at 10:30 am.  The status is placed near the football field, Farrell Stadium, where Michael played as a member of the college football team.  Around the statue are a myriad of dedication pavers including five from AFA reading in total: "Association of Flight Attendants / Honoring Michael together with / Lorraine Bay, Sandra Bradshaw, Robert Fangman, Wanda Green, Amy Jarret, Amy King, Kathryn LaBorie, CeeCee Lyles, Al Marchand, Michael Tarrou, Alicia Titus, Deborah Welsh / Never Forget."
