2017 Summer Regular Meeting of the United Master Executive Council

The 2017 Summer Regular Meeting of the United Master Executive Council (MEC) is scheduled to take place July 25-27, 2017, at the Hilton Newark Airport Hotel, 1170 Spring St., Elizabeth, NJ 07201.  Your Local Council President, joined by the 15 other Local Council Presidents from around our system, will address the business of our Union and the issues that are important to the Membership. 

We encourage each Member to witness the democratic process by attending your Local Council meetings and join us for the MEC meeting if you are in the Newark area.  Scheduled times for your Local Council's meeting and the MEC Meeting Agenda are posted on our website. To view the agenda you will need to login to your secure Members only area on our website. Complimentary airport shuttle is available from the AirTrain station P-4.

AFA Board of Directors and MEC Budget Meetings Conclude in Phoenix

The forty fifth (45th) AFA-CWA Board of Directors Meeting occurred on June 24th in Phoenix. In accordance with Article V.D.1.a, the only advanced agenda item was the proposed annual budget. A late agenda item was presented by Spirit Councils 74 and 76. This agenda item proposed amending Section IV.G.2.a of the AFA Policy Manual to change the timing of MEC budget reviews from twice annually to quarterly.  This late agenda item was adopted.

Following the BOD Meeting, the United MEC convened on June 25th to review and approve the MEC Budget for the 2017-2018 budget year.


(CAL) (CMI) Retroactive Holiday Pay to be Paid on July 14 Paycheck

Premerger CAL and CMI - Holiday Pay earned since the September 2016 bid month through June 2017 bid month will be paid on the July 14, 2017 paycheck and listed on your Pay Advice as “Retroactive Pay”.  By classifying the pay in this manner, the earnings will be considered for 401(k) contributions, Profit Sharing and the defined benefit plan.

All future Holiday Pay for the five (5) contractual holidays will be paid within the pay cycle for the schedule month in which the holiday falls.

The five (5) contractual Holidays for the United States and Guam, per Section 2.Q. of the Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) are:

  • New Year’s Day,
  • Independence Day,
  • Thanksgiving Day,
  • Christmas Day, and
  • Flight Attendant’s Birthday.

Summary Plan Description Addendum

Recently, all United Flight Attendants were mailed a Summary Plan Description Addendum for the 2017 Benefits.  Per Section 29 of the Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA), the company is required to send this information to all Flight Attendants.  Nothing has changed with your current year’s benefits.  This document is for your reference only and should be kept to provide each of us with a detailed description of our 2017 benefits.


Inflight Service App CBT Deadline, September 6, 2017

As a reminder, Computer Based Training (CBT) for the recently developed Inflight Customer Service App is now available from the Take-off Learning Network home page. Mandatory completion of this CBT is required by September 6, 2017. To access the CBT click on your “to do” list, located on the top of the page.

The CBT introduces the features of the Sales and Customer Issue Resolution app. The CBT is not available through your Link, and must be completed on a laptop or desktop computer.  The system will automatically verify your completion and you can confirm completion of the CBT through your transcript on the Learning Network.  Flight Attendants will receive one (1) hour of training pay for completing the CBT.

Mental Health Screening Tools – A Message from AFA EAP

Have you ever wondered if you or someone in your family is experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition? Mental Health America offers free and confidential on-line screening for a number of conditions including:

  • Depression Test - For individuals who are feeling overwhelming sadness
  • Anxiety Test - For those who feel that worry and fear affect your day to day life
  • Bipolar Test - For individuals who have mood swings-or unusual or extreme shifts in mood and energy
  • PTSD Test - For those who are bothered by a traumatic life event
  • Parent Test - For parents of young children to determine if their child’s emotions, attention, or behaviors might be signs of a problem
  • Psychosis Test – For young people (age 12-35) who feel like their brain is playing tricks on them (seeing, hearing or believing things that don’t seem real or quite right)
  • Eating Disorder Test - For those who would like to explore eating related concerns that have an impact on your physical health and overall well-being

"Stay Linked" Free iPad Drawing - Deadline Extended to July 14, 2017

We have learned that delivery of the supply of Got Link? bag tags were delayed in their delivery to at least two of our Local Councils.  In order to ensure equal participation by all of our Members, it has been determined that we will extend the deadline to enter until July 14, 2017.  All AFA Members in good standing, who sign up for AFA E-Lines and Local Council Newsletters through the Stay Linked page on our website, may participate in the drawing to win one of five iPad Tablets. Even if you’re already receiving E-Lines and Local Newsletters, you can participate, as long as you enter to win.  To register, click the “StayLinked” banner on our website and fill out the form by midnight, July 14, 2017, CST.  On July 19th, five names will be randomly drawn to determine the lucky iPad winners.


United Express Partners Reciprocal Jumpseat Agreements

Soon Flight Attendants from United and select United Express carriers will be able to list and jumpseat on each others aircrafts.  The automation for reciprocal jumpseat agreements is currently being developed. Upon completion the following United Express partners and United Flight Attendants will be able to utilize the reciprocal Jumpseat Agreements.

  • Mesa
  • Go Jet
