AFA United MEC President Ken Diaz Addresses Unfair Competition at Open and Fair Skies Rally in Newark

AFA Members, ALPA and other Unions, along with United Airlines management, rallied at Newark Airport to protest the launch of Emirates Airlines flight from Athens to Newark. This route is permissible under the U.S.-Gulf States Open Skies agreements. However, Emirates is only able to enter this obscure market due to enormous subsidies received from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government, in violation of this same agreement.

AFA United President Ken Diaz spoke about the impact on U.S. aviation jobs on Sunday. A video Ken’s speech can be found on our website.

ALERT: Positive Space Travel Program Due to Winter Storm for BOS, DCA/IAD and EWR Bases

United management has implemented a NRPS (positive space) travel program for the Flight Attendants commuting to/from the BOS, EWR, LGA, DCA/IAD and BWI airports.

Flight Attendants who are commuting to/from BOS, EWR, LGA, DCA/IAD and BWI, may self-list for positive space business travel to their base if they have a scheduled trip from Monday, March 13 through Thursday, March 16, 2017.

Once you list for the flight on which you wish to travel, your PNR needs to be authorized in order to complete the ticketing process by contacting your base concierge desk. Once authorized, you will be able to select a seat and check in for your flight.

Please note: This positive space authorization does not place you on must-ride status and flights will not be oversold to accommodate travel.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your base supervisor.

Spring 2017 Regular Meeting of the United Master Executive Council and Master Executive Council Officer and Committee Elections - April 11-13

April 11 through April 13, 2017, your Local Council Leaders will attend the Spring 2017 Regular Meeting of the United Master Executive Council (MEC).  This meeting will be held in Chicago at the Hyatt Rosemont, 6350 N. River Road Rosemont, IL 60018.  Your Local Council President, joined by the 15 other Presidents from around our system, will address the business of our Union and the issues that are important to you.

At this upcoming United MEC Meeting, the United AFA MEC Officers will provide updates on issues they have been working on in the time interval from our last meeting.

Also, elections for MEC Officers and many MEC Committees will be conducted at this meeting.  Election information, including qualifications and responsibilities of each position, is available on the MEC Election Page of our website.

All active Members in good standing who choose to run for one of the positions listed on the MEC Elections page should submit a resume and/or a signed “Willingness to Serve” statement, preferably fifteen days prior to the election date, to the United MEC Secretary/Treasurer at mecsec@unitedafa.com. Willingness to Serve Statements should not include personal information or employment history, as they will be posted on the United MEC website for viewing by the Membership. Resume information, if desired, should be in a separate document. Interested candidates are encouraged, but not required, to give an in-person interview at the MEC meeting where the elections will be conducted.  Any candidate who wishes to appear for an interview must do so at their personal expense.

We encourage Members to see our democratic process in action by attending your Local Council meetings and, if you are in the Chicago area, the MEC Meeting.  Schedule times for your Local Council’s meeting and the MEC Meeting agenda will be posted on our website.

On-Board Sexual Assault Survey

Congressional offices and victim rights advocates have reached out to AFA about the incidents of onboard sexual assault that has been reported by several media sources. As the expert voice in the cabin, AFA can make a difference for Flight Attendants and the passengers in our care.

This is a 1 minute anonymous survey, distributed by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO. The survey will help AFA gather information about Flight Attendants' experiences with passenger on passenger onboard sexual assaults.

Your answers will help AFA better understand the extent and nature of this issue. The survey will be open through Sunday, April 2, 2017. Take the Survey >

(CAL) Upcoming Changes to Pre-merger CAL Pairings

With the extension of blended fleets in domestic pairings the following changes will be taking place beginning with the April bid month:

  • B737 and B757 segments will now be blended with Latin and Latin LQ pairings and lines
  • Widebody and narrowbody segments will be blended within domestic single position chaser pairings and lines.

Management expects these changes to result in greater productivity and lend to a reduction in sit time between flights.

(CAL) Pre-merger CAL Error in Printed Bid Packages

An error has been identified within the PRINTED copies of April Bid packages affecting the following Reserve lines: LINE - 916 for EWR, IAD, ORD, DEN, LAX, and SFO; LINE - 926 for NTA. Both of these lines reflect April 27 through April 30 as 'regular' days off. These days should be 'immovable' days off.

The bid packages containing these lines published in CCS for these bases reflect the correct information.
