2017 House FAA Re-Authorization Bill

Yesterday, June 22, 2017, the House of Representatives released their first version of the FAA Re-Authorization Bill with enhancements that will benefit the Flight Attendant profession and the traveling public.  Some of the items that have been added to the Bill are:

  • 10 Hours Minimum Rest
  • Fatigue Risk Management Plan (FRMP)
  • Nursing Rooms in Airports
  • Cabin Evacuation Certification
  • Minimum Emergency Equipment Onboard Aircraft
  • Ban on Voice Communication (Calls In-flight)
  • Improved Insecticide Notification
  • Improved Regulations for Lithium Batteries

These provisions are a result of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA’s (AFA) work through legislative action and Flight Attendant’s direct contact to their representatives.  Even through this is the first draft that does not mean our jobs as advocates for Flight Attendants around the country are finished.  As amendments are published to the bill we will keep Flight Attendants aware of the changes and how you can help to ensure these provisions remain in the Bill.

Limited Dependent Verification

AFA has learned there will be an annual “limited” Dependent Verification process, targeting those who added new dependents during annual enrollment, but did not provide documents to verify those new dependents (unverified dependents only). This is not a large number of employees, as most employees provide the documentation of the dependent at the time of enrolling them. Targeted communications used in prior audits will be sent on June 30, 2017 to request verification.

[CAL] [CMI] Changes to Pay Claim Submission Procedure

Changes in the pay claim submission process for pre-merger CAL and pre-merger CMI Flight Attendants will be complete by July 7, 2017. You will no longer be able to submit pay claims using CCS beginning on that day; you will need to go to UnitedServiceAnywhere (USAW) to make pay claims requests. Claims submitted via CCS, will still be processed up to midnight, July 6, 2017, allowing time for assimilation to the new process, however, you may begin using USAW immediately.

Here are two ways to navigate to the USAW portal:

  1. By using the Pay Claims link in CCS, which has been temporarily linked to the USAW page.
  2. By going to Flying Together > Employee Services > USAW > Payroll > Offerings > For Questions Concerning Your Pay Register/Payable Hours

Once submitted, the Flight Attendant Crew Pay Team will determine the outcome of your claim, and contact you via email with their decision. They may also contact you to request additional information regarding your claim. The pay claim submission process remains unchanged for pre-merger UA Flight Attendants.

Vanguard Target Retirement 2010 Trust Select to combine with Vanguard Target Retirement Income Trust Select on or about July 21, 2017

The 2010 Fund has reached a target asset allocation matching the Income Fund and as described in the prospectus, the funds will combine. As a result of this fund action, the following will occur:

The 2010 fund will be closed to new investments and future contributions, including loan payments, and such investment elections will be transferred to the Income Fund on or about July 21, 2017.

All existing balances in the 2010 Fund will be transferred to the Income Fund on or about July 21, 2017.

If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact Fidelity for assistance.

Only 8 Days Remain to Enter the “Stay Linked” iPad Drawing

On June 1st, 2017 we launched our system-wide campaign “Stay Linked” in an effort to foster and improve communication with the Membership. All AFA Members in good standing, who sign up for AFA E-Lines and Local Council Newsletters through the Stay Linked page on our website, may participate in the drawing to win one of five iPad Tablets. Even if you’re already receiving E-Lines and Local Newsletters, you can participate, as long as you enter to win.  To register, click the StayLinked banner on our website and fill out the form by midnight, June 30, 2017, CST.  On July 5th, five names will be randomly drawn to determine the lucky iPad winners, but you need to hurry, only 8 days remain to enter to win. Good luck to all!

We’ve received a number of questions from those who are already receiving E-lines expressing concern they may be creating the opportunity for multiple e-mails to be sent when they enter to win.  We want to clarify that we will resolve any duplications and will use the e-mail address provided during the sign-up period in the event there is more than one e-mail address on file for a given individual.

Please Note: Elected Officials and Union Representatives are ineligible to win the iPads.
