Hurricane Harvey Update- AFA Disaster Relief Fund Contributions Requested

Date: August 27, 2017
Type: AFA Article

More than 24 inches of rain fell in 24 hours in Houston, the National Weather Service reported Sunday morning.  Harvey may soon weaken into a tropical depression, but the storm has stalled and will keep pounding the region with rain and wind through the coming week according to forecasters. Rescue workers in Houston renewed search efforts Sunday morning for residents trapped in their homes by Tropical Storm Harvey's rising floodwaters. Responders made hundreds of rescues in waterlogged Houston area overnight.

Flooding and tornadoes are resulting in strong storms adding additional threats to the safety of those in the area.  Historic flooding is affecting many areas which is making many roads impassable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families affected by Hurricane Harvey. We encourage everyone to stay safe, evacuate your area if advised by authorities, and take care of one another.  Resources to protect you and your family before, during, and after a hurricane can be found at the www.ready.gov/hurricanes .

In light of the Presidential action declaring parts of Texas as Federal Disaster areas, we expect the AFA Disaster Relief fund will also be available to our Members in need on a county by county basis.  For those of us who are outside of the disaster area, despite our best efforts and interests to assist those in need, it can be very disconcerting to learn there is little we can do.  To the extent we are able, we can make a difference through voluntary contributions to the AFA Disaster Relief Fund.

The Disaster Relief Fund provides a means for AFA members to assist other members and retirees who have suffered significant damage and/or relocation as a result of a disaster. Since its beginning in the fall of 2001, the AFA Disaster Relief Fund has provided support in the aftermath of many large-scale disasters including the September 11th terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and other natural and/or man-made disasters.  Flight Attendants helping Flight Attendants.
