Ladies and Gentlemen of Council 21,

As we prepare to gather with family and friends to give thanks, it is also a good time to consider giving back to those who may be in need this time of year.

The Cause Foundation® is a valuable resource, providing financial support to the families of United Flight Attendants, spouses, partners, and their dependents, due to sickness, accident or disability. Since its inception, it has helped more than 1,000 Flight Attendants.

Council 21 is a strong supporter of the Cause® mission, donating all proceeds from our Local Bag Tag sale. To date, we have been able to contribute $1,500 toward our goal of $2,500. Council 21 Bag Tag sales will continue until we reach our goal. Please stop by the office or look for us in the IAD Rotunda to purchase one.

In addition to direct contribution or payroll deduction, you can also help out while doing your holiday shopping through the Amazon Smile and iGive.com Programs. Please follow this link for more information. http://thecausefoundation.org/wp/shop/

The Local Cause Foundation®, will be at the upcoming Holiday Bazaar in the IAD Rotunda on December 7th and 8th. Be sure to stop by.

We congratulate all of our newest Council 21 Members who are coming off of probation through this month. You have all done a great job!

As always, we have a Volunteer from the Reserve Committee and either an Officer or Volunteer available 24/7. Please call us @ 703 260 0051, and follow the prompts: After Hours - Press 1 for Reserve, 2 for immediate issues, 3 to leave a message (calls returned next business day).

Thank you for being informed and engaged Members. Please remember to fly safe, challenge rumor and to respect each other.

In Solidarity & With Respect,

Todd Failla

Local Executive Council President

Phase II Vacation Bidding Open:

As a reminder,  2017 Phase II (Secondary) Vacation Bidding for 2017 is now open and will remain open until 0830 local domicile time, Wednesday, November 23, 2016. If you wish to check the vacation day allocations that remain, you may do so by domicile through Unimatic via DIS*14161 and DIS*14162. Phase II vacation awards will be posted no later than November 28, 2016 at 0830 local domicile time. Visit our website for more information on the 2016 pre-merger United Vacation Bidding process.

Understanding Holiday Pay:

Our Joint Contract Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) provides for additional pay for Flight Attendants on flight assignments during designated holidays and the Flight Attendant’s birthday. This is a new provision for the pre-merger CAL and CMI Flight Attendants. In an effort to assist you with understanding how to calculate holiday pay, examples of pairings are available on our website. If you have any further questions on our Contractual Holiday Pay, please contact your Local Council Office.

Section 4.I. of our JCBA specifies:

Protecting Our Scope Language:

Just as we should not perform work that is assigned to customer service, ramp, mechanics or pilots in violation of their job scope and hampering United's ability to accurately determine front-line staffing, we need to ensure that the scope of our job is not violated. Closing bins, confirming luggage stowed and making passenger announcements during boarding are all duties that traditionally define our work.  When supervisors or other employees perform this undisputed Flight Attendant work, it is a violation of our Contract.  Calmly advise anyone other than working Flight Attendants attempting to perform these duties that they are in violation of our Contract and ask them to stop. Be sure to report any violation of our scope to your Local Council.

Together we can enforce our Contract and protect our jobs. As Union Members we have this responsibility to each other.  Each of us individually enforcing our Contract is always important work. Our efforts are especially relevant when we consider our collective efforts to negotiate Contractual improvements.

Local Council Elections Underway:

AFA-CWA Local Executive Council elections are important because you determine the representatives for your Local Council that will support you and every Member in the Council. Local Executive Council (LEC) Presidents are Members of AFA's governing Board of Directors (BOD). As such, elect International AFA-CWA Officers, determine the budget, oversee all Union activities and where necessary to accomplish the goals of the Union based on the priorities of the Membership take action to amend AFA-CWA's Constitution and Bylaws.

Now that the MEC’s have merged and we have a NEW JCBA, the next step is the elections for combined Councils where dual Local Councils exist.

Nominations have now closed and it is time to start the voting process for our Local Council Officers; President, Vice President, Secretary and Local Council Representatives elections will be taking place in the following locations:

In order to be eligible to vote, you must be:

  • Actively flying, or continuing to pay your dues each month while on a leave of absence
  • Member of AFA-CWA
  • In good standing as of day of the ballot count. (Your dues may not be more than 30 days in arrears. If you are in bad standing and wish to vote, please contact the AFA-CWA Membership Services Department at 800-424-2401.)
  • A member of the base where election will be held.

For detailed information regarding the voting process, eligibility to vote and step-by-step voting guides and videos visit the AFA election website.

If you have not received your voting instructions within the next week, then please call AFA-CWA Membership Services at 800-424-2401 ext. 707
