January Flying

Our January flying will be a 31 day month beginning December 30th and ending January 29th. We are projected to have a total of 68 lines of flying, including 7 Purser lines.  Line value average is projected to be 78:55. We will fly 11 positions daily to GUM. There are no single position west coast IDs. For our base ID west coast trips, we will have one 2 day SFO all nighter, one 2 day SFO noon to noon, three 3 day LAX, and one 3 day SFO. All west coast IDs are at the beginning or end of the month which will necessitate building mixed flying on some base ID lines.

AFLAC Open Enrollment

You may have seen a recent AFA e-lines about open enrollment for AFLAC voluntary insurance plans. Open enrollment will be from December 5th , 2016 through January 15th, 2017. Unfortunately there will not be a local representative to do onsite enrollment this year in HNL. Members may also enroll and get questions answered over the phone. Beginning December 5, 2016, visit unitedafa.org and click on the Aflac banner where all enrollment information will be available.  You will find a “self-service” enrollment option, along with plan summaries, rates, and a question and answer document.

Insurance plans include Short-Term Disability, Accident, Critical Illness (including cancer coverage), and Hospital Indemnity. Flight Attendants enrolling during this open enrollment will have a February 1, 2017 effective date for their policies.  All policy premiums will be payroll deducted for your convenience.

National Child Identification Program

Another recent AFA e-lines article detailed AFA’s support and involvement with the National Child Identification Program. We have received our Child Identification Kits in HNL, and you can obtain one from Lani, Ilse, Jeanne, Dwayne, or myself.

Reserve Holiday Wish List

For the month of December, reserves have the opportunity to preference where you would like to layover three days proceeding and two days after Christmas. You may submit your preference through a link that will be available on our AFA site starting December 4th. Here is a page on our AFA site detailing more information. Please note that if you enter your preference before December 4th, it will be deleted.

Phase III Vacation

Phase III Vacation bidding is now open, and closes December 7th at 8:30am HST. Awards will be posted no later than December 11th.

AFL-CIO Legislative Priorities Meeting

As a member of the Hawaii AFL-CIO, I attended the Hawaii Legislative Priorities meeting November 30th. It was focused on State legislation that will likely be brought forward in the 2017 session.

Aviation Workers Double-Crossed by DOT NAI Decision

Unfortunately the DOT has approved a foreign air carrier permit for Norwegian Air International. We have written about this in previous Coconut Wireless messages. Our hope is that the Obama administration will reverse this decision which could have a far reaching negative impact on the U.S. aviation industry.

                                                            Kevin
