Changes to Crew Drug Testing Notification

Scheduling Update for December 2017

Greetings Council 26,

Vacation bidding round 2 opened on Nov 8 and closes on Nov 16. Awards will post by November 20th. If you are planning to vacation trade please familiarize yourselves with the Vacation Modifications guide and the Electronic Bulletin Board User guide.

2018 Vacation Modifications User Guide

The Vacation Modifications User Guide provides step-by-step instructions on how flight attendants can submit a vacation trade and/or fly through request in CCS, after 2018 Vacation has been awarded. The user guide includes information on the following topics:

  • Open Time Vacation Trades by Seniority
  • Instant Open Time Vacation Trades
  • Flight Attendant to Flight Attendant Vacation Trades
  • Fly Through Requests (Operational and Non-Operational)

Detailed guidelines and rules for the vacation process can be found in the 2018 Vacation Booklet by clicking here.

Electronic Bulletin Board User Guide

The Electronic Bulletin Board (eBB) User Guide provides step-by-step instructions on how flight attendants can use the bulletin board in CCS to find other flight attendants with which to trade vacation periods.

Both user guides can be downloaded on Flying Together > Inflight Services > One United > Reference Guides, or by clicking here. They are both also available on Link in the Content Locker app under the JCBA Resources folder.

For any questions regarding the 2018 Vacation bidding process, please contact the Vacation Team.

Until a provision of the JCBA is implemented, flight attendants will continue operating under the provisions of their previous collective bargaining agreements.

Changes to crew drug testing notification

Due to the safety sensitive functions of the job, flight attendants are subject to alcohol and drug testing, which includes random testing, as mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Effective immediately, Corporate Safety has revised the protocol for notification of a random test. The changes are:

  • The Corporate Safety representative will only notify the selected crewmember of the test. They will no longer provide the name to other crewmembers.
  • As such, crewmembers are required to show their United company ID to these United Corporate Safety personnel, upon request.

Below, please review what to expect if you, or someone on your flight has been selected for drug and alcohol testing.

Planeside

Corporate Safety will display their United ID and advise that a member of the crew will be tested but will not disclose the name. They will use a standard script: “Hello, my name is _______ from United Corporate Safety. Please advise the crew that I will be pulling someone from this flight for testing. Please have the crew display their company IDs so I can determine who has been selected for testing.”

International arrivals

If not at the aircraft, the Corporate Safety representative will meet the crew outside of customs using a standard script: “Hello, my name is______ from Corporate Safety. Please display your Company ID so I can determine if you have been selected for testing.”

Further details regarding drug testing and the implications of avoiding or test refusal are available on Flying Together under United’s DOT Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention Policies and in the eFAOM.
