1930 Reserve Assignments: When am I Released to Check-In?

MEC Reserve Committee

Reserves who receive an assignment during the 1930 Reserve preferencing and clean-up process are considered released to check in once they have completed their current day assignment or Ready Reserve obligation, if applicable. “Ready Reserve” is a calendar day assignment, and as such, the responsibility to be telephone available is from midnight to midnight for days you are assigned to be on call.

From the Reserve Survival Guide page 39:

Release to Check-In (Section 8.D.11. and 8.E.2.)

Whether you are assigned as part of Reserve Preferencing or as part of the post-preferencing clean-up process, you will be released to check in and will not be subject to displacement from the pairing by a Lineholder. If on Ready Reserve status for the current day, you remain on Ready Reserve status until midnight. However, having been assigned to a pairing or Standby for the following day, you will subsequently appear as a 1-day available Reserve for the remainder of the current day.

Although the likelihood of being called for a current-day assignment is drastically reduced once assigned for the following day from situations such as irregular operations or negative Reserve coverage, it could become necessary to remove a Ready Reserve’s next-day assignment in order to assign them a current-day trip that would otherwise go uncovered. That said, if on a day of normal operations, you would simply like the peace of mind of knowing you will not be called, nothing prevents a Ready Reserve who has been assigned for the following day from contacting Crew Scheduling and requesting to be released for the remainder of the current day. At their discretion, Scheduling may agree to do so.

Example:

Marcus was assigned Ready Reserve for January 11th but did not get called for an assignment all day. As part of the preferencing process, he receives an assignment for the 12th. Marcus acknowledges his next-day assignment but must remain phone available until midnight. Although he is now shown on the availability list as a 1-day Reserve for the remainder of the 11th and will likely not be called, he would really like to go to dinner and a movie with friends without worrying about the possibility. Marcus calls the Crew Desk and asks if he can be released from his Ready Reserve obligation for the remainder of the calendar day. Since the operation is running smoothly, Scheduling agrees to release him.
