Spirit Airlines Flight Attendants Ratify First Contract Agreement

Date: February 7, 2003

WASHINGTON, DC – Spirit Airlines flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants, AFL-CIO, have ratified their first contract with the airline.

The agreement was ratified Friday with 87 percent of those flight attendants who cast valid ballots voting for the agreement. Out of 422 valid ballots received, 367 votes were cast “FOR” the contract. There were 579 eligible voters.

“Our flight attendants have always been proud to provide Spirit passengers with the highest level of safety and service,” said Tara Swiderski, AFA Spirit Master Executive Council President. “Now our legally binding contract provides us with the security and quality of life that we deserve.”

Some of the highlights of the first contract include having more flexible scheduling requirements and securing work rules, pay and benefits in writing.

The tentative agreement on a first contract was reached January 15, more than two years after the flight attendants elected AFA as their union. Ratification required a simple majority of Spirit flight attendants to vote in favor of the contract.

Spirit Airlines, a privately owned company, is headquartered in Miramar, Fla. and has bases in Detroit, Atlantic City, N.J. and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

More than 50,000 flight attendants at 26 airlines -- including more than 600 flight attendants at Spirit -- join together to form AFA, the world’s largest flight attendant union. For more information, visit AFA’s website at www.afanet.org.
