AFA-CWA Calls for Union Election at Allegiant Air
October 6, 2006
Washington, DC – The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) today filed a petition with the National Mediation Board (NMB) to hold an election for union representation on behalf of Allegiant Air's flight attendants. Over 150 Allegiant flight attendants, based in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be represented by AFA-CWA if a majority of employees vote to support the union.
"This is exactly the right move by these employees at exactly the right time," said Patricia Friend, AFA-CWA International President. "They chose the union that can give them a strong voice when they need it the most. We look forward to having Allegiant Air flight attendants join tens of thousands of their flying partners who already have AFA-CWA fighting for their interests."
The NMB is the federal agency that oversees union representation elections in the airline industry. Once the NMB verifies that enough signed union representation cards have been collected by AFA-CWA, a secret ballot election will be held. In order to file for an election, AFA-CWA collected the required percentage of signature cards from the Allegiant flight attendant work group.
For over 60 years, the Association of Flight Attendants has been serving as the voice for flight attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill. More than 55,000 flight attendants at 20 airlines come together to form AFA-CWA, the world's largest flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afanet.org.
