(CAL) President Message

Date: November 14, 2015

Dear Flight Attendants,

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the people of France. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and send our sincere condolences to the victims, families and friends of this horrific event. Please know that we will remain in constant contact with the company, and we assure you that crew safety is a priority. The company will continue to monitor the situation closely, and we will keep you informed as more information becomes available.

Recently, we have made several large changes within the MEC, and there has been some reasonable concern with the scope and speed of the decisions we have made. A special MEC meeting was held, where I was honored that your Local Presidents found that my experience and knowledge made me the correct choice to serve as your MEC President. In addition, we needed to fill several positions on the JNC. We decided that it was in the membership’s best interest to elect new JNC members as quickly as possible, to ensure that contract negotiations are not stalled due to the recent changes. Having said that, I can assure you that we carefully reviewed our options and chose the most qualified candidates for the JNC. Negotiating your contract is one of the cornerstones of your Union, and we always make every effort to apply as much talent to the task as possible.

I have received correspondence from the membership asking about the selection of Morna McDonald as one of your JNC members, as many of you were not familiar with Morna and did not know her excellent qualifications. Morna comes to the JNC with a vast amount of experience: she has served the CMI Membership as President, Vice President, and Grievance Representative before crossing over to s-CO. Morna is well-versed in the Continental, Continental Micronesia, and United contracts, and has been involved with negotiations since August of 2014, serving as a Subject Matter Expert within the IBB process until July 2015. Morna is a graduate of the Meany Center – National Labor College. She has many years of negotiations training and experience with Continental Micronesia contracts, and participated in the National Mediation board training process. Both the CMI and CAL contracts were built off of each other over the decades and Morna’s experience makes her an invaluable asset to the joint negotiation team, and although you may not personally know her, she will absolutely serve you well as a negotiator. I understand that change can be unsettling or difficult to process, but change can also be positive. Change can set a new tone. It can instill us with new ideas and perspectives. It can provide a renewed opportunity to work together to improve our collective futures.

The company is making record profits, and all of you deserve to benefit and share in the success that you helped to create. It is time for us to speak with one voice. I am confident that both Cari Kershaw and Morna McDonald will represent you at the negotiation table expertly, while keeping in mind the culture of Continental Flight Attendants. They will strive toward the vision of a combined contract that benefits ALL United Flight Attendants.

We will be electing a new secretary treasurer to fill my current position and responsibilities, at our next MEC meeting. The time and date will be announced once the schedule has been confirmed.

In closing, I am going to ask you for your support, and for you to stand together and support one another. It is time to focus on our future. It is time to lead by example, and I am honored to take the first step towards unity.

In Solidarity and Unity,

Randy Hatfield
