Happy Holidays

Date: December 24, 2015

Dear Flying Partners:

Christmas is a day of traditions often spent with family and friends. Within the context of those traditions, the holiday has different meanings for each of us and our families.  For some of us, Christmas is integrally tied to our faith and religious beliefs while for others the holiday season is tied to the greater cultural celebration of giving.  For many, the holiday season is viewed as one of hope and renewal as the world looks forward to the impending New Year and the promise of the future.

As Flight Attendants, many of us will spend the holiday season making this day of family traditions possible for the thousands of passengers we care for as they make their way to their final destinations.

In the end, some of us may find ourselves away from our immediate families during the holiday period.  However, wherever we are, we are never alone.  Because we collectively excel at making the best of the holiday with our flying partners and the traveling public, we hold a special place in the hearts of many despite what may be a brief acquaintance.

During this season of hope and renewal, it is more important than ever that we celebrate the collective and individual impact we have on each other as well as the passengers with whom we interact - each and every day we come to work.  As the work group that spends the greatest amount of face time with our passengers, we must accept and management must acknowledge that we are the face of United Airlines.  Our efforts are instrumental in building the relationships that attract and retain our customers.  Our professional commitment is directly tied to the success of our airline.

At this time of the year, we must take time to recognize our contributions not only to the direct success of our airline, but to our chosen profession - always keeping in our hearts who we are and why we do what we do.  In spite of the many attempts to sway us from our commitments to each other, our Union and our profession, we must be true to ourselves and remain committed to our careers and profession as Safety Professionals and First Responders because this is not just a job.  It’s a way of life.

At Christmas, let’s celebrate the unique place we hold in the lives of our flying partners and the traveling public, not only during this time of the year, but always.  This is our common bond.

On behalf of the United Master Executive Council and the many Flight Attendants who serve as volunteers on the Committees of our Union and in our Local Councils, we wish you a safe and joyous Christmas season.  Whether at home or away during this holiday, let the spirit of the season capture your heart, mind and imagination.  Happy Holidays to all!
