Happy Labor Day! View a Labor Day Message from Your AFA-CWA United MEC Officers

Date: September 4, 2015

Ladies and Gentlemen:

As the Labor Day holiday weekend approaches, we remember that Labor Day is our day.  Labor Day is observed the first Monday in September in the United States and Canada.  It is a day of festivities dedicated to no man, living or deceased, to no group, race or nation.  It is a day dedicated in honor of working people and the social and economic achievements obtained through hard work and solidarity.

Labor Day began not as a national holiday but in the streets when, on September 5, 1882, thousands of bricklayers, printers, blacksmiths, cigar makers and railroad men  - all laborers – took a day off and marched in New York City.  Labor Day establishes a yearly, national day of tribute that recognizes the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of their nations.

Through the Labor movement, working men and women fought for fair wages and to improve working conditions.  Organized labor played an integral role in the fight against child labor, the accomplishment of the eight hour workday and the “New Deal” which provided workers with Social Security and unemployment insurance.  Through the political efforts of organized labor, society was transformed.

Over the years, through dedicated solidarity and commitment, organized Labor won substantial victories over discriminatory barriers some of which limited the professional lives of Flight Attendants. Today, men and women, married or single, with or without children, call this profession their own.  Through our dedicated service to our profession and our proven record as Safety Professionals and First Responders, Flight Attendants have earned the respect and admiration of the traveling public, government regulators and our industry.

Based on our collective experience of the past several years, we know that corporations and the highly paid Chief Executive Officers often trample on the human rights of workers.  While these corporate executives demand high dollar contracts to protect their pay and benefits, these same individuals routinely attempt to block the efforts of employees to gain the same protections and opportunities.  We need look no further than our own aviation industry for examples.  With our company now making substantial profits, now more than ever, we need to stand together with all of our flying partners across our industry, our company, indeed within AFA, to continue to build our solidarity to ensure the gains we rightfully deserve are achieved at the negotiating table.  It is our turn.

Whether spending the weekend on the aircraft with flying partners or barbecuing with friends and family, set aside some time to acknowledge the meaningful celebration of the holiday – our holiday – that recognizes our labor and our collective contribution to the success of our company.

On behalf of the entire United Master Executive Council, we wish you a safe and enjoyable Labor Day holiday. Stronger together.  Better together.

In Solidarity,
The United Master Executive Council Officers

Ken Diaz

Andreas H. Curlee
Vice President

Jeffrey W. Heisey
Secretary Treasurer
