United MEC Officer Labor Day Message

Date: September 2, 2016

Ladies and Gen
Each year on the first Monday of September we celebrate the achievements of American workers and what they have sacrificed by celebrating Labor Day.  In the late 1800s at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12 hour days and seven day weeks to barely make a livable wage.  Children as young as five years old were forced to work in factories and mills at a fraction of the salary of adults doing the same jobs.  All of these workers, especially the destitute, were forced to work under extremely unsafe and unsanitary working conditions.  Labor Unions grew prominent and became very vocal because of these working conditions and began organizing strikes and rallies to protest the poor conditions.  Because of these brave men and women, we in the labor industry are recognized for the hard work we do every day.

Today we recognize Labor Day as a day of celebration and dedication to the men and women who fought to protect the rights of all workers in the United States.  Even though we may have accomplished many things throughout the years, not all challenges have been won.

Today we continue to fight for local and federal protections for all working Americans by carefully considering who we elect and confirm if their interests are in line with the interests of the working American.  We must ensure that the next United States President and Congress will stand by us and fight for Flight Attendant issues including protecting U.S. aviation jobs, a fatigue risk management plan, adequate minimum rest, mandatory human trafficking awareness training, and improved aircraft evacuation tests.

This holiday whether you are flying or enjoying Labor Day with family and friends, take the time to reflect on the past and the people who have helped us achieve the protections we are so proud of today.  Be proud to be part of your Union, as each and every one of us is what makes our organization unified and strong.  With our unity, we can continue the fight for better-working conditions for all of our Sisters and Brothers throughout our Flight Attendant family.

On behalf of the entire United Master Executive Council, we wish you a safe and enjoyable Labor Day holiday.

In Solidarity,

Ken Diaz Andreas H. Curlee Jeffrey W. Heisey
President Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer
