Group Universal Life Insurance

Date: January 3, 2017

As part of the Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA), Group Universal Life Insurance (GUL) is the Voluntary Life Insurance product for all Flight Attendant effective January 1, 2017.

Pre-merger CAL and CMI Flight Attendants will move from Voluntary Term Life insurance to Group Universal Life (GUL) insurance effective January 1, 2017.  The move to GUL will affect how your premium deductions/contributions are processed from your paycheck, as deductions will now be taken out once per month on the second of the month paycheck.  This second of the month deduction remains the same for pre-merger United Flight Attendants.

Coverage for Voluntary Life Insurance, including GUL, is signed up for in multiples of annual “Salary” for the Flight Attendant.  One to ten times annual salary can be elected up to a maximum of $600,000.  Effective January 1, 2017, there are changes for all Flight Attendants as the JCBA has a new definition for annual “Salary” for GUL.  Annual salary is defined as 85 hours per month, times your hourly rate, time 12 months.

Monthly premium rates for coverage are based on age bands and the amount of coverage elected in $1000 increments.  Both your age and pay increases have an effect on your coverage amount and thus your premiums:

All Flight Attendants enrolled in GUL have been mailed a GUL Certificate Specifications Page from Securian/Minnesota Life.  This page will show both the amount of coverage and your premium.  With the JCBA change to the definition of salary, accompanied by an increase in contractual pay rates, most Flight Attendants will see an increase in both the amount of Life Insurance coverage and a corresponding increase in premiums. Coverage levels can be changed by going to Securian’s website through Your Benefits Resources YBR on Flying Together, under the Employee Services tab.  For any questions regarding GUL please contact Securian/Minnesota Life at (866) 887-1043.
