ALERT: London Attack Outside Parliament - Be Alert and Be Aware of Your Surroundings
March 22, 2017
Today, at approximately 2:40 PM London time, Metropolitan Police were called to an incident at Westminster Bridge. A driver had run into a crowd crashing the vehicle into the front gate of Parliament Square. The assailant was shot by police. UK Police, in order to allow emergency services to deal with the ongoing incident, are requesting everyone avoid the following areas: Parliament Square; Whitehall; Westminster Bridge; Lambeth Bridge; Victoria Street up to the junction with Broadway and the Victoria Embankment up to Embankment tube.
No scheduled Flight Attendant layover hotels in London are within a two-mile radius of the incident. At this time United AFA MEC Safety, Health and Security and Corporate Security are monitoring the situation and there is no indication of any impact to Flight Attendants. Flight Attendants should maintain strong situational awareness and always be mindful of your surroundings while on a layover. If you have any safety concerns please contact your Local Council.
While we understand your friends and family are also concerned about your safety, we strongly recommend against using the “checking in” function on social media as a way to let people know you are safe. Unknowingly, in a situation where violence has occurred or could be escalating, doing so could inadvertently provide a tip on your location that could put you in danger.
For those of us outside the situation who are concerned for those who may be in the affected area, we understand your desire to obtain information on the status of friends and flying partners. However, every effort should be made to keep telephone lines open because there is a need for United management to reach those on layover to determine what, if any, immediate assistance is required. Under no circumstances should we communicate the location or status of any crewmember using social media for reasons previously stated in this article. If you are on layover in London and have not been contacted by the company, please contact the Crew Desk to advise of your status.
As with any developing situation, events can change rapidly. As additional information you should know about becomes available, we will communicate that to you via the Flight Attendant Alert Center on our website.
