Rubella Outbreak in Japan

Date: October 26, 2018

MEC Safety, Health and Security Committee

The CDC website has currently advised of a Rubella outbreak in Japan. It is for this reason we encourage everyone to ensure your vaccinations are current.

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles). Many children in the U.S. are immunized as infants and toddlers. However, not everyone gets vaccinated as a child and many adults move to the U.S. from countries without immunization programs. Generally, adults born before 1957 are considered immune to measles and mumps. The CDC advises that people who cannot show that they were vaccinated or are otherwise protected against rubella should get vaccinated before leaving the United States.

More information and guidance is provided on the CDC website.
