AFA Works for You! – Safety Health and Security
April 4, 2018
MEC Communications Committee
As a continuation of our educational series on the roles and work of the various MEC Committees, this week we focus on the important, ongoing work of our Safety, Health and Security Committees on both the Local and MEC levels of our Union.
The MEC Committee consists of one Chairperson and two Vice-Chairpersons. One of the primary objectives of the committee is to maintain and improve Flight Attendant safety, health, and cabin safety standards. This group of highly trained professionals work with UAL, the Federal Aviation Administration, and AFA-CWA International Air Safety, Health & Security Department as well as a variety of other governmental and regulatory agencies in Flight Attendants’ best interest.
Additionally, the Committee monitors and participates in accident/incident investigations as well as in monthly safety meetings with representatives from the company. AFA Air Safety, Health & Security Union representatives are view by Congress as experts in their field. When Congress looks for a voice for Flight Attendants in matters of safety, health & security, they look to AFA for that specialized expertise.
Our MEC SHS representatives also play an integral role in the design/re-design of aircraft cabin interiors of new and reconfigured aircraft. Efforts to ensure the success and proficiency of our newest members is accomplished by coordinating efforts to ensure consistency in the curriculum of United’s Initial and Recurrent training programs and the professional and career AFA-CWA objectives.
Flight Attendants with a special interest in safety and a critical eye toward detail are encouraged to contact their Local Council President about volunteer opportunities for this vital committee.
