United MEC President, Ken Diaz Addresses Saracini Aviation Safety Act
August 10, 2018
Ken Diaz, President of the AFA United Master Executive Council for the Association of Flight Attendants in concert with Ellen Saracini, the widow of our United Flight 175 Pilot, Victor Saracini, who was killed on 9/11/2001, joined bipartisan Representatives Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-PA. in calling on federal lawmakers to act on a bill that would secure cockpit doors on aircraft.
“This is not an Republican or Democratic issue, this is an American issue, common sense safety.”
The Saracini Aviation Safety Act, named in honor of United Airlines Captain Victor J. Saracini, calls for lightweight, wire-mesh gates to be installed on existing planes between the passenger cabin and cockpit door. The mesh would block access to the flight deck whenever it would be necessary to open the flight deck door and serve as a secondary barrier.Earlier this year federal legislation mandated the requirement for all new aircraft to be equipped with the secondary barriers.
