September 11, 2001 - We Will Never Forget!
September 12, 2018
Today marked the 17th year in which we remembered those who gave their lives in the service of the company and ultimately our nation. During the remembrances that occurred at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City, the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA, the Flight 93 Memorial at the U.S. Capitol, the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, and the USS Midway Memorial celebration in San Diego, CA, among others, we came together to remember not only those who were lost but also those who loved them. These events are somber events filled with great reverence and respect for the lives lost that day – passengers and crew alike.
This year the Flight Attendants who travelled to Shanksville to attend the annual Flight 93 Memorial were not able to attend the national service we have participated in every other year. Arrangements were made for these Flight Attendants to travel from locations around the world to the Pittsburgh International Airport and then by bus to the Memorial. Arrangements were made with the Park Service to accommodate the bus and include crewmember attendance.
As we always do, the bus arrived one hour ahead of schedule. However, the bus was held three miles from the memorial for three hours and past the time of the National service including the bell tolls at 10:03 am when our Heroes gave the ultimate sacrifice. While waiting to access the memorial site, they viewed campaign t-shirts for 2020 with hurtful messages including “F—- Your Feelings.” The disrespect and mean spirited “leadership” that makes sacred ground a disgusting campaign stop is appalling.
This day is about our Heroes, the extraordinary unity of good that they displayed with strangers and fellow Americans. AFA Flight Attendants and ALPA Pilots may have been delayed in our efforts to honor the actions of our Heroes, but we will never allow anything to disrupt our promise to Never Forget. We waited and finally conducted our own service at the memorial once the obstacles were removed. Be assured our presence was appreciated by the family and friends of those who were lost that fateful day 17 years ago. #Never Forget
