Reserve Move-up Lines and Sacred Days with Vacation

Date: October 23, 2019

MEC Reserve Committee

As we prepare for Vacation bidding 2020, we offer a timely reminder of how sacred days, that is, days off immediately prior to and/or following a period of vacation apply to Flight Attendant schedules.  It’s important that we emphasize that the application of the Contract language addressing sacred days for Reserves differs somewhat from the manner in which this same language is applied for Lineholders.

For Lineholders, the days off immediately prior to and following an awarded vacation period, based on the original line of flying, are considered sacred days.

For Reserves, days off preceding or following vacation days that were in the original Reserve line are not considered as sacred days for the purpose of building a Reserve Move-up line of flying.

When a Reserve Move-up line of flying is built, trips are filled in to complete the line around vacation and, if possible, any protected days. If protected days cannot be honored, the Flight Attendant will be skipped until those days can be honored.

Once the Reserve move-up line of flying is completed, any days off preceding or following vacation in the Reserve move-up line of flying are then considered sacred days.

Details regarding the Reserve Move-up process may be found in Section 8.B. of our Contract as well as the Reservesection at www.unitedafa.org.

If you have additional questions, contact your Local Council Reserve Committee.
