Unite Here Protest
November 27, 2019

The Holiday Season should be a time of joy and celebration but for many of our Sisters and Brothers at Unite Here it is a time to stand in solidarity and fight for a livable wage and access to affordable health care. On November 26 catering workers, represented by Unite Here, gathered at airports across the nation to call on American Airlines to address poverty wages, and expensive healthcare.
Their work is essential to airline operations, yet one in four workers who provide food and drinks to American Airlines at its hubs and who work for subcontractors LSG Sky Chefs and Gate Gourmet earn less than $12 per hour, including many who have been in their jobs for over a decade.
A survey of 581 out of approximately 4,100 Sky Chefs workers serving American Airlines at the carrier’s hubs found that 30% of the workers were uninsured and 35% rely on government-subsidized healthcare for themselves or their kids. Meanwhile, American reported a 2018 annual profit of $1.9 billion.
From New York to Hawaii unionists stood together to make their voices heard. At AFA-CWA we believe in the Power of Solidarity. We stand with our Sisters and Brothers in their fight for a better life.
