Transfers Awarded to AUS, FLL & TPA Satellite Bases Drive Other Transfer Opportunities 

Transfers were awarded today to the recently announced satellite bases at AUS, FLL & TPA.  In addition, the filling of those vacancies drove other transfer opportunities on the system as follows:

Flight attendants awarded a transfer can now see their awards in CCS on the transfer request page.  This is not the final list of transfers awarded – Flight Attendants must accept the award in CCS prior to the acceptance deadline in order for the transfer to be effective. Flight Attendants have seven (7) days to respond.


SEA Satellite Base Bid – Now Open  

On November 11, 2019 the company announced the opening of additional satellite bases In Austin, TX, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Tampa, FL and Seattle, Washington.

Transfers to AUS, FLL & TPA were awarded today. The window for those Flight Attendants interested in transferring to the SEA satellite base opened as of December 4, 2019 and will close on December 27, 2019 at 0800 CT.  The company anticipates filling 120 vacancies at the SEA satellite base.

The SEA satellite base will open effective with the March 2020 Flight Attendant bid month.

In accordance with Section 17.A of our JCBA, a Flight Attendant who declines an awarded transfer shall not be eligible to file another transfer bid for a period of three (3) months from the date of declining the transfer. Upon accepting a transfer, the Flight Attendant shall not file another bid for a period of six (6) months. 

Flight Attendants on COLA, Special COLA, Personal, Parental or Adoption leave(s) may request to continue her/his leave following the award of a voluntary transfer. The Company may grant such request in its discretion. If not granted, the Flight Attendant is expected to return from leave status on the effective date of her/his transfer.

  • Transfer Inhibits will be waived for the initial staffing of SEA.
  • Once awarded, Flight Attendants will have 7 days  to accept/decline their transfer.
  • After this initial award, subsequent transfers will be handled in the same manner as other locations.

Inflight Scheduling has determined that there will be an opportunity to award One-Month COLAs and Job shares for the February 2020 bid month.

Flight Attendants are strongly encouraged to review the provisions in JCBA Sections 15.B., 15.N. and Section 16 in addition to reading the “COLA, Job Share and Multiple-Month Partnership Program Overview” guide available on our website, unitedafa.org and on Flying Together. 

This upcoming February One-Month COLA: 

  • As a COLA, Medical benefits are not offered at active employee rates 
  • If awarded a COLA, you will NOT be expected to fly a carryover trip into the February bid month


Reserves will have more options for splitting their lines.  Once awarded a job share, go to Help Hub (search keyword: Job Shares) to submit the form designating how you would like to split your line award.

Job share partners split the line award of the senior partner and each partner is limited to a monthly maximum of fifty-five hours (55:00) pay and credit.

 

Awarding Process for February One-Month COLA & Job shares

One-month COLAs and matched job share requests are combined into a single list by base in seniority order and are awarded during the same process.

Matched job shares are awarded based on the seniority of the senior Flight Attendant partner.

Both flying partners must submit a bid identifying the partner to be considered for a matched job share.

All matched job shares are awarded in conjunction with one-month COLAs in seniority order. If additional company time off remains, available unmatched job shares will be paired, and remaining COLAs will be awarded in seniority order.

Flight Attendant Instant Vacation Trades with Open Time Opened December 5

The remaining vacation allocations were posted as of December 4, 2019 and instant vacation trading opened on December 5, 2019 at 8:00 AM Local Domicile Time (LDT).

 

The instant vacation trade window will remain open throughout the balance of the 2020 schedule year. If you wish to trade for an open vacation period(s) you will need to submit a vacation trade with open time request. The latest the trade request must be submitted thirty (30) days before the earliest calendar month involved in the trade.

 

Vacation trades with open time are “instant” trades. Once entered, they are either accepted or rejected. Once processed, these trade requests do not remain on file for further consideration. If you wish for any request to be considered at a later time, you must re-enter the trade.

Flight Attendants wishing to trade with open time for a vacation period that is not currently available must continue to check the allocation matrix because the following circumstances can affect available vacation days.

  • Any vacation days awarded, that are vacated later (e.g. separation from company, retirement, etc.)  will be added to the allocations. 
  •  If a Flight Attendant trades down to fewer vacation days with another Flight Attendant or for open vacation days, any surplus of unused days will be added to the allocations for use by another Flight Attendant.

Layover Safety

As Safety Professionals, we know the importance of being aware of our surroundings to immediately identify a potential issue.  We work hard to make safety our top priority and this focus is something that each of us routinely integrates into our thinking even when we are off duty and enjoying our layover.   After a long day at work, we’re tired and it’s easy to become distracted and let the following hotel safety guidelines slip past us:

  • Do not “check-in” or post layover hotel locations on any social media network.
  • Insist that the crew sign-in sheet be kept in a secure place.
  • Try to have rooms assigned close to other crewmembers, when possible.
  • Do not mention room numbers in the presence of other hotel guests and request hotel staff not to announce your room number.
  • Prior to closing the door to your room, use your suitcase to prop open the door and check the room with a fellow crewmember, if possible. 
  • When you are alone on the layover, you might consider requesting hotel security or other staff to escort you to your room and wait while you inspect the entire room.
  • Check closets, under beds, behind drapes and the bath. Ensure the phone is working and you can directly dial 911 or another emergency number, where locally available.
  • Take note of the number of fire exits, where they are located and if re-entry is possible from floor to floor.
  • Once inside the room and the door is closed, use all available door and window locks.
  • While at the layover hotel, keep personal luggage in your possession or secured at all times.  Leave valuables at home or place them in the hotel safe, including your LINK.
  • Place your room key and your flashlight at your bedside and keep in mind that we stay in some areas subject to earthquakes and tornadoes.  Always review available hotel emergency procedures.
  • Verify with the front desk the identity of anyone at your room door, including room service, before allowing them inside.

Our Safety, Health and Security Committee and our Hotel and Transportation Committee work hard to ensure our safety on layovers. If you experience an incident that has the potential to compromise your safety, you can report it at www.unitedafa.orgReports/ Forms. When you take the time to report concerns you provide vital data which can be used to effectuate changes to current hotels or locations we stay while always ensuring our safety comes first. 


Reserve Day Off One Way Trades No Longer Require Crew Scheduling Intervention

In the past, once a Reserve Flight Attendant picked up a pairing on her/his days off, if she/he later wished to drop the trip in exchange for days off to another Flight Attendant, Crew Scheduling had to be involved in order for the trade to be processed.  As of December 5, 2019, Crew Scheduling is no longer required to assist in these trades as they have been automated and the defect has been fixed. As long as the trade is legal, it will be processed automatically if trading with a Flight Attendant at the same base. 

Keep in mind, however, that an out of base lineholder looking to pick up a trip from a Reserve on days off will be required to contact Crew Scheduling for assistance in processing the trade.


UChat Video Now Available in CCS

UChat was developed to facilitate communication between Flight Attendants and to replace E-notes.

For those who may be unfamiliar with UChat, an instructional video is now available in CCS.  To access the video, in CCS, access the Help tab and select Video Resources from the drop down menu.


“Read and Relax” - CAUSE Foundation Trip Drop Contest  

The work of the CAUSE Foundation is critical to helping Flight Attendants in need.  That each of us is aware of their ongoing work and efforts to assist Flight Attendants in need is the best way for us to learn how we can help each other.   In their ongoing effort to engage us in their work, the CAUSE Foundation will be sponsoring another paid trip drop contest.  This year, five (5) lucky Flight Attendants will win a paid trip drop.  To participate, all that is needed is for you to sign up and read a newsletter before July 2020.  

You can sign up for our newsletter at www.thecausefoundation.org.  Click on newsletter and fill out all the information.  This is needed in order for the CAUSE Foundation to pick the five (5) winners.  There is plenty of time and opportunity for all of us to participate as this year’s contest will run from January 2020 – June 2020.
