Hot Topic - Satellite Bases

We’ve received a number of questions about the recently announced Satellite bases.  More than ten (10) years ago, the United MEC explored the concept of satellite bases and, after much research & deliberation, determined at that time that a satellite base concept did not serve the Membership for a number of good reasons.

The concerns identified at that time have been addressed and we negotiated & approved into our Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (2016 – 2021) a Satellite Base (LOA #24) Letter of Agreement that is in our JCBA.


Overdue Health & Welfare Charges 

Health and welfare benefits, such as healthcare premiums, are deducted from an employee’s paycheck each pay period. When these premiums cannot be deducted from an employee’s paycheck, the past due premiums are considered overdue.

Employees are required to pay overdue Health & Welfare premiums after meeting a two-part threshold:

1.    $750 in overdue premiums, and

2.    Two (2) months of uncollected premiums.

Once these thresholds are hit, a direct bill notification will be sent to the employee’s current address of record with the company.  This notice will contain the following instructions:

1.    How to resolve any unpaid benefit premiums, 

2.    Contact information for employees to inquire about overdue balances or for any additional questions. 

Failure to pay overdue balances may result in suspension of the payroll deductions for benefits which may subsequently result in the termination of all Health & Welfare benefits.

On the other hand, if the employee’s overdue premiums do not exceed the two-part threshold ($750 and two months of uncollected premiums), the overdue amount will be held until either the next paycheck, or until the amount exceeds the thresholds. If the employee returns to receiving a paycheck before meeting the thresholds, any overdue amounts held will be deducted from their pay until the full overdue balances are collected.

This policy was further revised in 2016 when United made changes to how arrears are processed and administered for all employees.

When employees remain in active status but do not have sufficient pay for their Health & Welfare deductions, the employee will be moved to a Direct Bill status and will be required to pay once reaching the $750 threshold.

Once the employee has three (3) consecutive months with pay that is equal to three times (3) the sum of her/his medical, dental and vision deductions they will be moved back to payroll deductions. 

If a member has paid through Direct Bill for the month that they are moved back to payroll, the UABC will issue a refund to the employee.

Additional CCS Enhancements

Primary Line Bidding Screen Enhancements

We are pleased to announce that we have made additional enhancements to the Inflight Bidding Screen, which will be effective on May 12, 2019 at 0800 Home Domicile Time, when bidding opens for the June schedule month. These enhancements include the ability to select and delete multiple bid rows at one time, as well as functionality to withdraw, essentially deleting, a submitted bid. A detailed description of these enhancements and use of these functions can be found on Flying Together.


Enhanced Staffing Issues on Narrow body Domestic Flights 

We continue to receive reports from Flight Attendants of the company’s action to assign working crew members in excess of the Established Staffing Guidelines on domestic narrow body aircraft.  Given the recent staffing reductions on certain International flights, this action seems completely counterintuitive from a logical perspective when it appears the company is steadfastly resistant to adding staffing to these international flights where the addition of staffing on these flights would deliver for all of us the biggest bang for a buck.   

 

United management is contractually responsible to staff aircraft consistent with the Established Staffing Guidelines set forth in Section 7.Z.1. Additionally, the company shall publish the ESG in the Flight Attendant Policies and Procedures Manual. A reasonable effort will be made by the Company to monitor and staff consistent with ESG.

 

AFA continues to require the company comply with proper staffing on all flights (Domestic and International), ensuring Flight Attendants have the working crew support they need to complete a safe and enjoyable service for our customers.

Link Safeware Insurance Expires Next Month Opt-In for 2019-20 Coverage Now Through June 6, 2019 

Enrollment for the 2019 - 2020 Safeware LINK insurance is now open and the selection process will remain open through June 6, 2019. 

Flight Attendants are required to designate as to whether or not they want to enroll in the Safeware insurance by opting IN or opting OUT of coverage. 

  • Opting IN will reduce your exposure to the $375 replacement fee* if your LINK device is lost, stolen or damaged.  You must actively OPT IN to take advantage of this coverage.

  • Opting OUT of coverage will make you financially responsible for the $375 replacement charge if your Link/sled is lost or stolen.

*Note: This charge is waived for the first instance of theft, if a police report is submitted within 10 days.

The cost when opting IN is $30.00 dollars for the year and coverage includes both the LINK and the sled device. Your annual enrollment fee covers the first replacement claim for lost or theft. Subsequent replacement claims will be paid by the employee at replacement fee costs per claim. 

Payment may be made via payroll deduction or credit card. Flight Attendants can make their selection by visiting my.safeware.com/ual

Note: Flight Attendants deciding to opt in after the election deadline, will need to opt in at their base, where validation that you have your LINK and sled in operating condition will be required. The rate will be pro-rated based on the date you make the election.

Unitedafa.org – More than a Mobile App  
MEC Communications Committee

Your MEC Communications Committee is dedicated to the education of Flight Attendants and is actively involved in the active engagement of the Membership.  As part of this commitment, a new website was launched as the digital home of the United AFA website. 

The recently redesigned website has a highly intuitive design, adaptive to various digital platforms and eliminated the need for a separate AFA mobile “app”.  The lag time experienced in the past in reporting edits or updates to information communicated to the Membership has been eliminated.

The website is searchable. Flight Attendants can enter the topic they wish to search and a comprehensive list will be populated. Providing the ability for Members to gain access to verified information is instrumental in getting out accurate information and eliminating rumor and misinformation.  This is your one true “go too” source of information.

While the website has made a separate mobile application unnecessary, we continue to receive requests from Flight Attendants for an accommodation that similar to an application button from the home screen. As a reminder, the mobile website can be saved to the home screen of your mobile device which will allow you to “open” the website from the home screen with functionality much like an app.

Uniform Update  
MEC Uniform Committee

In a recent company update on  Flying Together United announced that they were working with Tracey Reese and Brooks Brothers to make, based on employee feedback, some much needed changes from the first uniform wear test. 

These changes are in process and the next generation uniforms are projected to have an updated design and color test in the first quarter of 2020.  

The full roll out of uniforms now scheduled for early 2021. Your MEC Uniform Committee has been in discussion with management about the need to ensure sufficient uniform pieces are available to allow Flight Attendants to look their professional best. While recent communications from management has suggested that some uniform items may be discontinued, the recent announcement of the 2010 rollout has resulted in the need to revisit some of those decisions.

Thanks to the advocacy of thousands of Flight Attendants and our focused #FightFor10, we achieved 10 hours minimum rest in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 which was signed into law on October 5, 2018. Unfortunately, we have learned through multiple conversations with industry and regulators, Delta Air Lines has pushed the Department of Transportation and the FAA to slow down implementation, and now all airlines are saying they will wait for instruction from FAA before complying with the law.
