Human Trafficking and the Busy Summer Travel Season – Remain Vigilant!

Each year commercial airline travel is used by human traffickers for the purpose of transporting millions of adults and children into modern-day slavery. Flight Attendants are the on front lines to aid in combatting this illegal and heinous act. With the heightened summer travel season and the subsequent events frequented by traffickers, it is more important than ever to remain vigilant while working both domestic and international flights in order to identify and report suspected cases of Human Trafficking.

“Human trafficking is a hidden crime. Victims rarely come forward to seek help because of language barriers, fear of the traffickers and/or fear of law enforcement.” – Blue Campaign

Our dedication to ending human trafficking starts with education and is backed by United’s reporting policy and procedure. When reporting a possible human trafficking situation utilized the outlined procedure in your Link and CRM to communication with the Captain. When reporting situational information to the Flight Deck ensure the term “suspected human trafficking” is used and review the appropriate Threat Level, Flight Attendant guide and actions to take when taxiing, inflight or at the gate.

Flight Attendants are safety professionals and skilled observers. Our training in detecting and reporting Human Trafficking will continue to improve as part of the FAA bill H.R. 302 Section 408, which ensures that not only will Flight Attendants continue to be trained but, that more airline personnel, whose jobs require regular interactions with passengers, will be trained on recognizing and responding to potential human trafficking victims. Together we will help to put an end to Human Trafficking.
