PDX and GEG Layovers – Responding to Hazardous Air Quality Index

Date: September 16, 2020

The number and extent of the fires in the Pacific Northwest have contributed to the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the cities we serve to reach a level designated as “Hazardous”.

In either Portland (PDX) or Spokane, WA (GEG), crewmembers are encouraged to implement the following practices while on layover:

  1. Minimize your exposure to the outside environment.
  2. Limit your physical activity, especially exercise involving aerobic activities.
  3. Keep well hydrated

Additionally, United will provide all crewmembers flying to PDX and GEG with N95 respiratory masks. These masks will be distributed by the PDX and GEG station personnel to all crew members upon arrival. When used correctly, the N95 mask will protect the wearer from particulates and should be used whenever you must leave an environmentally controlled location.

Finally, if you would prefer to opt-out of your pairing with a layover in PDX or GEG, call Inflight Crew Scheduling. You may be reassigned to another pairing, but if no trips are available for reassignment, your trip will be dropped without pay. However, you will not be assessed any points for the missed pairing.
