Voluntary Separation Leave Deadline

The deadline for the Voluntary Separation Leave is tonight February 16, 2021 at 11:59 PM CT. It has come to our attention that the company released an extension for the VSL window to Flight Attendants based in, or residing in Texas. The extension applies to those Flight Attendants and ONLY those Flight Attendants. If you are not based in, nor reside in the State of Texas and wish to take the VSL option you must accept it by the original deadline.

March Primary Bid Award Timeline

In a CCS priority message the company informed us that line awards for the March bid month will be published in accordance with the JCBA by 0800 on February 18, 2021. However, due to the close of some voluntary programs, we should expect to see line awards several hours later than what we are accustomed to.


Vacation Fly Through and Reserve Guarantee

As a reminder, our Contract provides us with the ability to exercise an option to fly through an awarded vacation period.  When flying through a Vacation Period, in addition to being paid for the trips flown during the vacation period you are paid the value of the vacation period itself.

At the onset, whenever a Reserve elects to fly through a period of vacation, the Reserve has decided to take pay in lieu of the actual vacation period. The value of the vacation is placed in “Add Pay” and is paid in addition to the Reserve guarantee. However, depending on the timing of when the election is made (Advance or Operational Fly Through) and the number of Reserve days of availability encompassed by the vacation, there may also be a reduction to the minimum: 

Advance Fly Through requests are submitted no later than 1000 HDT on the 5th day of the calendar month prior to the month in which the vacation is scheduled to begin. When a Flight Attendant elects for the Advance fly through and is awarded a Reserve line, the line will be awarded with the originally scheduled days on and/or off as they appeared in the bid packet with no Vacation days. The value of the Vacation days will appear in Add Pay.  Because the Reserve will be fully available for assignment by the company for the full month, there will be no reduction to the Reserve minimum. Vacation is paid in lieu of vacation time off and the pay is placed in add pay.

Operational Fly Through requests are made by contacting Crew Scheduling any time after lines have been awarded. When a Flight Attendant elects for operational fly through after having been awarded a Reserve line, the Vacation days will be removed and will become days free from availability, appearing as “OFF” in the line. (In other words, Reserve days of availability that were part of the originally awarded line are not restored.) The value of the Vacation days will appear in Add Pay, however in this case the Reserve minimum will be reduced by the number of Reserve days of availability that were part of the awarded line and were encompassed by the vacation.

Inclement Weather Reminders

System wide members are dealing with the direct impact of severe winter weather. From ice storms and snow in Texas, to polar vortex in the Midwest and nor’easters on the east coast, it’s a mess out there.  We understand weather events have the potential to disrupt travel plans to arrive to work despite our best efforts to proactively plan ahead.

Commuting - In advance of commuting during potential inclement weather we encourage Flight Attendants to review the Commuter Policy in Section 28 of the JCBA.

When can I utilized the provisions of the Commuter Policy?


1. Un-forecast severe weather conditions or other natural disasters (i.e., blizzards, hurricanes, earthquakes of similar events), or

2.Hazardous or impassable roads resulting from severe weather, accidents, or natural disasters, or

3. Mechanical problems while on the way to work

4. Unexpected airport disruption(s) or closures

Which type of transportation can I use?

The Commuter Policy covers all forms of transportation. You can review the specifics at Unitedafa.org.

Remember, when commuting, be proactive. You should keep records of calls to crew scheduling, flight listings, traffic reports or images to ensure you have all the necessary information to be covered by the policy.

Cancellations and Reassignments

Section 7.Q. (Loss of Flight Time) covers irregularities when your pairing cancels ahead of time and procedures differ depending on how much notice is given. Section 7.Q.1. covers notice on the same calendar day, Section 7.Q.3. covers one or more calendar days and Section 7.Q.2. covers Severe Weather Action Plan. Reassignments for under Sections 7.Q.1 - 3. must comply with Section 7.Q.4 before leaving the base and Section 7.Q.5. after leaving the base.  Additionally, Section 7.T. covers irregular operations when a flight is open due to a Flight Attendant not being able to connect and subsequent reassignments.

It’s always important to carry your Contract, either the printed copy or an electronic version (available in your Link locker), and be familiar with how these Contract sections interact and apply to your circumstances.

2020 W-2 Form

If you signed up to receive your United Airlines 2020 W-2 (and/or 499R-2/W-2 PR) electronically through ADP, forms are now available for you to download and print at paperlessW2.ual.com.

If you are using a mobile device, United instructs that you should not download the ADP mobile app, as your United credentials will not work. If you signed up to receive paper forms, then your 2020 W-2s should have been mailed to you by Jan. 31, 2021 to the home mailing address listed in My Info as of Dec. 31, 2020. (You can check your address through Flying Together > Employee Services > My Info > Personal Details tile.)

AFA-CWA Scholarship Deadline

The Joe Beirne Foundation awards sixteen partial scholarships of $4,000 for 2021-2022 school year. Winners will be selected in a lottery drawing, are also eligible to receive a second-year scholarship of the same amount contingent upon satisfactory academic accomplishment.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, applicants must be CWA members or their spouses, children and grandchildren (including dependents of laid-off, retired or deceased CWA members). Applicants must be high school graduates or at least high school students who will graduate during the year in which they apply. Undergraduate and graduate students returning to schooling may also apply. Prior winners may not reapply.

Applications for the 2021-2022 school year close April 30, 2021 at 11:59 PM EDT.


United Updates Employee Mask Policy to Comply with Federal Law 

Following further clarification from the TSA regarding airline employees, United has updated the employee mask policy in the Working Together Guidelines to reflect the following:

You must wear a face mask at all times while on duty, on airport property, and onboard the aircraft to be compliant with the federal law. This is an update to the previous company policy. 

The following situations noted below are no longer exceptions and now require mask compliance.  

  • non-public facing areas like the Inflight base
  • making onboard announcements
  • during crew rest
  • other situations where you are socially distant from others


The following are exceptions to the federal law:

  • If wearing a mask inhibits your ability to perform emergency procedures, such as shouting commands in an evacuation, decompression scenarios when the flight attendant needs to don an oxygen mask, or in situations where PBEs are required.
  • When delivering individual customer briefing to a deaf or hard of hearing customer, for whom the ability to see the mouth is essential for communication.
  • While eating, drinking, or taking oral medication for brief periods, but your mask must be worn between bites and sips.


Reserve Timeline Calendar for March (UPDATED FEB 22, 2021)

If awarded or assigned a Reserve schedule for the March bid month, there are various scheduling request deadlines and processes that occur during the period between bid awards and through the first week of the new month.
