Maximum Duty Time Limitations

As aviation’s First Responders we know that when we are on duty we are responsible for the safety and well-being of the passengers in our care, alongside our fellow crew members. Our Contractual Duty Time defines the length of time we are permitted to be on duty and how it adjusts depending on certain negotiated variables.

Understanding how to calculate and track your Maximum Duty Time is an important tool to have in protecting your contractual rights especially during irregular operations. Section 6.S. of our Contract provides the following limitations:

The above duty time provisions are based on the Flight Attendant’s Home Domicile Time (HDT).

*Limited to no more than seven hours (7:00) flight time, unless the duty period contains a single segment, in which case the single segment may exceed seven (7:00) hours of flight time; ground time no greater than two hours and thirty minutes (2:30) and not more than one flight segment after a redeye flight. A redeye flight is on with any portion scheduled to operate from 0200 to 0400, local time.

**A High Value Trip (HVT) shall be limited to a single duty period starting between 0500 and 1859, containing no more than three (3) flight segments with a total flight time of nine hours (9:00) or more.

Section 6.T. of our Contract provides the following:

"The actual duty times apply only once you have checked in for the first assignment (flight, deadhead, standby, etc.) in the duty period. Any rescheduling must be done without exceeding the maximum actual duty time based on the original commencement of duty”.

Contract Sections 6.S., 6.T. and 6.U. provide for the maximum period of time that a Flight Attendant may be scheduled on duty, as well as a maximum time in the actual operation.

When calculating maximum duty times, the flight time published in the bid packet should be used- not that day’s projected flight time based on current weather/flying conditions. In the event Crew Scheduling needs to re-assign a Flight Attendant in the operation and after the Flight Attendant has already checked in, the Flight Attendant can be rescheduled up to the actual maximum duty time (including debrief and customs).

Under no circumstance shall a Flight Attendant be required to remain on duty, without her/his concurrence, in excess of the applicable maximum hours shown in the charts above, including deadheading.
