2023 Winter MEC Meeting
The Winter 2023 Regular Meeting of the United MEC Agenda started today at the Hyatt Rosemont. The meeting will run January 17-18, 2023, at the hotel which is located at 6350 N. River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018. The third day of our Regular Meeting will be a closed Executive Session.
The meeting is open to Members in good standing. If you happen to be in Chicago on the dates the meeting is scheduled, we encourage your attendance and participation in our Democratic process.
As part of our meeting safety protocols, to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 we have established the following:
- No person may knowingly attend the meeting if they are COVID positive.
- Masks are optional, unless required by local ordinance or private businesses. The exception to this is if a participant begins to feel symptoms, she/he should take typical precautions such as wearing a mask and testing.
- Practice regular hand hygiene and always ask before shaking hands or hugging. Some individuals may prefer fist or elbow bumps.
- Mutual respect includes COVID protocols. We will not condone shaming or disrespect of any individuals’ choice regarding masking, not masking, or otherwise.
We appreciate your cooperation and support as we resume more normal meeting practices.
Profit Sharing for 2023
Given United’s return to profitability, management has announced their expectation that we will see a Profit-Sharing payout in early 2023. Our last Profit-Sharing payout was based on the corporation’s 2019 profitability and was paid in 2020.
Profit Sharing, as provided for in Section 4.N. of our Contract, is based on our full year financial results and may vary based on corporate performance in the fourth quarter. While this was the final variable in determining the Profit Sharing, the corporation is forecasting pre-tax profits above the $10 million threshold for 2022.
The final results of the Profit-Sharing payout are based on corporate costs relative to corporate revenue. However, we should not over predict the size of the Profit-Sharing payment. While the payout is expected to be above $100 million, this amount is 20-25% of our 2019 Profit Sharing payout which was nearly $500 million. We should also be aware that there is still substantial corporate debt that also plays into and impacts our bottom line.
Final Profit-Sharing results are anticipated to be announced in the coming weeks.
AFA Welcomes Class 2246!
Last week, AFA welcomed class 2246!
Class 2246 will begin their careers at our Chicago, Denver, Newark and Washington D.C. Domiciles. We look forward to welcoming our flying partners to the line as they begin their new careers!
As a reminder, when a probationary Flight Attendant has questions about our Contract and work rules, please direct them to their Local Council for assistance. We want to ensure they are receiving the most accurate and vetted information as we work in supporting them for our collective future success.

We know that disasters can change lives forever. While we can’t stop destructive events from happening, we can, as a Union, assist our members with their recovery. AFA established the Disaster Relief Fund after September 11th to assist our members whose lives were placed in harm’s way. AFA members and retirees, whose primary residences are in the counties listed on the FEMA website are eligible for $200.00 from the AFA-CWA Disaster Relief Fund. It is a gift made possible by the generosity of your fellow union sisters and brothers with AFA. (See the AFA website for links to the FEMA site: www.afacwa.org/drf)
