2024 Vacation Process
The 2024 annual vacation process begins on September 25, 2023, through December 5, 2023. We have several tasks to complete in preparation for vacation elections and bidding. A guide on our website breaks this down into three steps: Choose, Bid and Trade.
The first step is the "Choose," with the annual Vacation Election. This begins by September 25, 2023, and will remain open until October 15th, meeting the requirement of a twenty (20) day period, under our Contract.
United has updated their 2024 Vacation Guide and additional information is on our website. More comprehensive details will be included in our next Debrief.
Safety, Health & Security Committee Annual Training Conducted
Our MEC Safety, Health, and Security Committee held their annual training last month in Chicago.
We had over thirty (30) of our fellow flying partners from all across our system come together for this event. Some of them were newcomers to their Local AFA Safety Committees, while others were experienced and long-time members of their Local Council AFA Safety Committee.
During the training, the Master Executive Council (MEC) Safety, Health, and Security Committee (SHS) provided valuable updates on their ongoing work and shared insights into their latest initiatives. They also had meaningful discussions about how Local Safety Committees play a crucial role in the ongoing efforts of our Union in this arena.
The most rewarding part is that your Local Council Safety, Health, and Security Committee volunteers came away from this training with new skills and additional resources to better serve all of you. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to these hard-working and dedicated volunteers for their outstanding service to their fellow flying partners.
We are incredibly proud of the commitment and dedication shown by our Safety, Health, and Security Committee members and all those who attended the training.
Together, we continue to prioritize safety, health, and security, ensuring that we maintain the highest standards for our profession.
Celebrating Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month
We're excited to announce the beginning of Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th. During this special time, we celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic communities all around the world.
This celebration, also known as National Hispanic Heritage Month, initially started as Hispanic Heritage Week when it became law through President Lyndon Johnson's signature in 1968. In 1988, it was expanded from a week-long event to a month-long celebration, observed annually from September 15th to October 15th.
If you'd like to learn more about the amazing achievements of Hispanic and Latinx Americans, you can explore the following dedicated websites and resources:
We truly believe that embracing and celebrating our differences is what makes us stronger and more united as a community. Let's seize this opportunity to pay tribute to the Hispanic and Latinx heritage, which is an essential part of our global family.
Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month AFA Pins
In 2021, the AFA-CWA Executive Board passed a Resolution recognizing Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month and providing for the creation of a new diversity AFA pin in celebration. You can read the complete text of the resolution by clicking here.
This month, all AFA Local Councils are distributing the AFA Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month AFA pins. You are encouraged to pick up this pin from your Local Council and wear it in Solidarity as we work together to accomplish diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workforce.
