As we reflect on the recent profit sharing announcement made earlier today we can celebrate the impressive profitability of our airline, which will fund our future industry-leading Contract. Simultaneously, it is normal to feel disappointed regarding the lower percentage of profit sharing this year compared to last year. The financial hardships borne by Flight Attendants cannot be mitigated by profit sharing alone.
As Flight Attendants, many count on this compensation, not as a bonus but as a financial bridge in the midst of a national inflation crisis. It is after all, money we have earned through our dedication to our profession and our commitment to United’s success.
Our profit sharing follows the contractual framework outlined in our JCBA, Section 4.N.. This year’s announced payout of $584.3 million and the corresponding percentage of 5.2977% is a negotiated provision based on United's full-year financial results.
Under the current formula, it is important to note that it is the difference in profitability year over year and not the overall profit of the past year that dictates the amount. From 2023-2024, the difference was not as significant as 2022-2023 in terms of profit growth percentage (see the data provided below). Despite the higher overall profit, our percentage is based on the difference between last year and this year.
The higher percentage specified in our Contract regarding profit sharing was not achieved according to the pre-tax earnings reported by United. Per section 4.N. of our JCBA, the profit sharing amount is lower than in 2023. This calculation is based on your 2024 eligible earnings, and you will receive the corresponding amount determined by our profit sharing percentage.
Profit sharing payments will be paid to the Flight Attendants as a stand-alone check on February 27, 2025, subject to applicable 401(k) deferral election, withholding, and taxes. Visit Flying Together to view more information about the profit sharing calculation. You can find your individual profit sharing statement and review it here.
To management, profit sharing is just a financial metric. To Flight Attendants, it’s a recognition of the collective effort and commitment we bring with us to the line every day. Our workforce deserves a fair share that truly reflects our contributions to United's success.
United's financial achievements in 2024 positioned them to lead the industry. Just as this is reflected in the company’s profitability, it must also be reflected in an industry-leading Contract.
