As safety-sensitive professionals under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Flight Attendants are required to undergo drug and alcohol testing before, during, and after performing safety-sensitive duties.

Failing a test or violating testing rules can have serious consequences, including removal from duty, investigation, and potential separation. Such incidents can also impact future employment as a Flight Attendant with other commercial carriers. For detailed contractual information on Alcohol and Drug Testing at United, please refer to Section 21 in our Contract.

To support Flight Attendants who may be facing challenges related to alcohol, medications, or other drugs that jeopardize their profession, personal relationships, or overall well-being, our AFA Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides a range of resources. One such resource is the Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program (FADAP), which offers specialized substance use treatment tailored specifically for Flight Attendants. FADAP ensures that seeking help for a substance use issue is treated confidentially and without judgment, just like any other medical illness.

If you would like to assess whether your substance use is putting you at risk, we recommend watching this informative video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW26MtixfY4.
