Human Rights & Equity Committee
Since 1967, February has been dedicated to honoring the history and sacrifices of the Black Community and their countless contributions to our Nation. The African American experience cannot be glazed over in history books or rewritten for ease of consumption. It is one of strength, fortitude, and triumph that should be learned from, shared, and celebrated.
As Unionists, we champion the ideals of equality, equity and inclusion. It has been a slow progress in many ways, as our industry has not always represented the diversity and strength we see today. Our strides with diversity have been made possible by the bravery and tenacity of those who came before us.
During this month, we often focus on honoring the names of those we know: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (father of the civil rights movement), Ruth Carol Taylor (first African American Flight Attendant), Harriet Tubman (conductor on the Underground Railroad) or Maya Angelou (writer, activist, and singer). While individuals like these helped change the trajectory of history, there are countless others whose names and contributions have been lost. Like the heroes who paved the way for a better future, we celebrate the everyday heroes in our communities. They are the ones striving to make the promise of our nation, that all people are created equal, a reality.
Regardless of the communities we identify with, each of us has a duty to one another to uphold the mission of not only our Union but of the founding message of our nation. While others may seek to use our differences to divide us, we know those exact differences give us strength. Our diversity is what makes us who we are, and our shared story is the history we will continue to build upon.
Throughout the month, we will honor United AFA Members who stand for inclusivity and transformation within our industry and communities. When we share our experiences, we bridge the gap between differences and find common ground through understanding.
