United Flight Attendants planning to adopt a child are encouraged to review our industry leading optional time-off provisions negotiated in our Contract which provides for Adoption Leave of Absences.

A Flight Attendant who legally adopts a child shall be granted a leave of absence within twelve (12) months following the date when the Flight Attendant takes custody of the child or, if travel is required, when the Flight Attendant begins travel to obtain custody of the child.

Adoption leave must be requested in writing and include the requested dates. The leave request may not exceed twelve (12) consecutive months. The chart in Section 15.N. contains additional rules and benefits that apply to adoption leave.

Flight Attendants interested in adopting a child and the involved process are encouraged to contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where they will be provided resources for adoption, particularly adoption from the U.S. foster care system.
