Martin Luther King Jr., born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, was a Baptist minister and civil rights leader who became one of the most influential figures in American history.
Dr. King was ordained at the age of 19 and started his ministry career at Ebenezer Church alongside his father. He later became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He was elected the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIB) president, which led the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. The Montgomery bus boycott arose after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger.
On August 28, 1963, Dr. King was invited to speak at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom as a representative of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The march was intended to show support for President John F. Kennedy’s civil rights legislation. It was at this march that Dr. King delivered his unforgettable “I Have a Dream” speech to over 250,000 civil rights supporters. Dr. King’s speech called for civil rights, economic rights, and an end to racism in the United States.
We thank and honor Martin Luther King Jr. for everything that he has done to ensure civil rights for all. Despite the advances in civil rights, we are far from an equitable society, and thus, we must continue to fight for equal rights. It’s important to pass down his legacy to the next generation so that they, too, may enjoy the freedom to have a dream.
Just as the work of Martin Luther King Junior inspired change, fostered understanding, and built connections, our own stories have that same power.
In honor of the upcoming Black History Month, we want to celebrate United AFA Members who are a part of this diverse community. Every Flight Attendant’s story and journey is unique, and we want to hear yours. When we share our experiences, we bridge the gap between differences and find common ground through understanding.
This will be the first of many opportunities to highlight and honor the communities that build the fabric of our flying family.
