AFA Thanks Munoz for Leading United Out of Its Darkest Times and Looks Forward to Working with Scott Kirby
Following the announcement of leadership changes at United Airlines, Ken Diaz, President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO (AFA) at the union’s United chapter, issued the following statement:
“Oscar Munoz took over as CEO of our United just as the airline was being torn apart, morale at an all time lo
w, and the network destroyed. He fought back attacks on his leadership and efforts to wrestle control away from him after he made clear his focus would be on rebuilding the airline with the support of employees and passengers. AFA-CWA stood with other unions to ensure Oscar could do his job, and he has. The airline is rebuilding and prospering in large part because of the people at United Airlines.
"Oscar’s efforts to put in place talent like Scott Kirby, who is without a doubt the best network man in the industry, is also paying off. We offer congratulations to Scott Kirby for his appointment to serve as Chief Executive Officer and we look forward to working with him. We will keep the focus on the people of the airline and encourage the entire executive team to deliver on the vision set by Oscar as he began his time as CEO.
"It is critical that the entire executive team works together with labor and addresses concerns raised from the frontline as we work diligently to keep everyone safe, with proper staffing that also allows us to care for the people on our planes. We rely on this follow through for those of us who face United’s passengers every day.
"We offer sincere and heartfelt thanks to Oscar Munoz and his family for fighting so hard to make United Airlines a premier airline once again.
