MEC Officer Message: Fourth of July

Dear Flying Partners,

The freedom we are afforded in the United States of America today was only possible because of the sacrifice of others. The inalienable right to liberty can be easy to overlook, having become so eternally ingrained in our culture and history.

Almost 250 years ago, the established colonies united in their quest for independence. Together, they asserted their freedom from Britain to establish a nation ruled not by a monarch but by the people. In the face of adversity and uncertainty, the founding fathers risked everything to establish this great country. Their sacrifice is a testament to the resilience and determination that shaped the birth of American independence, a journey we celebrate every July 4th.

The foundation of our Union mirrors that of our Nation: the fundamental rights we fought for life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and a promise of a free future.

This Fourth of July, as we reflect on our nation's history and our Union we are reminded that our Declaration of Independence was a call to action, a rally to change. There could be no complacency in the battle against tyrannical leadership and lack of representation. Our nation's founders sacrificed their safety and, in many cases, their lives, standing up for what they believed in.

Ordinary people standing up for what is right is the truth we hold, and it is evident today.

Sacrifice is nothing new to the workers of America. Every day, we continue to fight oppression, challenge the status quo, and advocate for equity against the greed of modern-day tyrannical leaders. The fight for our future is not just for us but also for those who will join the workers of America alongside us after. It is up to each of us to be the change we want to see in our Union and in our Country. Our legacy will be defined by the actions we take today.

As Flight Attendants, we often spend holiday occasions connecting others with their friends and loved ones while sacrificing time with our own. This holiday, whether gathering with friends and family, watching aerial displays of our independence, or earning Contractual holiday pay while at work; as each of you uniquely celebrate our independence, we wish you a safe and happy holiday.

In Solidarity,

Ken Diaz, President
