Safety Checks: Start Your Flight Right!

While on-time departures are important to United's performance, safety always comes first. We must not allow the focus of on-time departures to supersede our professional obligation to comply with the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)

We can all agree that boarding is one of the most challenging parts of our jobs. At times we are rushed due to quick turns, tight connections, or being a Reserve rushing to a gate. Many times, passengers are already boarded or quickly following right behind us. As safety professionals we are expected to overcome all of these types of obstacles and fulfill our safety duties. In these busy moments, we must keep safety as our top priority. Ensuring that all our safety checks are completed prior to door closure is not only keeping safety as a top priority but ensuring our equipment is both present and functionable as required by the FAR.

Part of being professional and prepared for each flight includes following our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and being fully complaint with all FAR requirements. Following the FARs and procedures supports not only the safety of each flight, but our passengers and each of us operating in the environment of that flight.

Remember the door doesn’t close until the safety checks are completed! It is more than ok to “Take a Moment for Safety” and ensure compliance.
