Social Media Awareness

This week, we highlight the importance of being mindful, respectful, and aware of the content we share online. As Flight Attendants, we work in a public-facing role. With advances in technology, our names and faces can be easily identified through our personal or professional social media accounts and other online platforms, connecting us back to our place of business and providing an opportunity for strangers to gain information about us without our consent. We should always be cognizant that anything we share on social media is NEVER truly private.  

Take a moment to focus on social media awareness by reviewing your settings and online presence. Check your personal accounts and verify what information is accessible to the public, including photos and any tags or hashtags associated with them.

Below are a few suggestions to help protect your privacy and avoid potential disciplinary action issues that could arise.

• Consider making your profile private and verify what someone, not on your friend list, could learn about you without your awareness.
• Keep all your personal details, such as work experience, places lived, contact info, and date of birth, hidden from the public.
• Monetary gain (for example, influencers) using United benefits is prohibited per United policies. Avoid anything that may be seen as a conflict of interest.
• Secure your settings by requesting permission for tagging on all accounts.
• Comments on United posts are not private and can identify you as connected to United as an employee. You will form a nexus when using a hashtag, commenting on a company post, or tagging the company online.
• Never tag your locations when at layover hotels.
• Avoid offensive or insensitive comments against our Working Together Guidelines.
