As we enter the summer season, it's important to be mindful of the increased travel of Unaccompanied Minors (UMNRs). As Flight Attendants, we play a crucial role in ensuring their safety and providing a positive travel experience. Here are some essential reminders for handling UMNRs during this time:

  • Communication is key: Maintain clear and frequent communication with UMNRs, their parents, and fellow crew members. Address any concerns or special instructions provided by parents or guardians.
  • Accommodate their needs: Prioritize the well-being and comfort of UMNRs throughout the flight. Offer assistance with carry-on luggage, seat assignments, and any other requests to make their journey as smooth as possible.
  • Provide reminders: Regularly remind UMNRs about safety procedures and guidelines. Emphasize the importance of remaining seated during critical phases of the flight and waiting to be escorted off the aircraft upon arrival.
  • Utilize resources: Make use of the UMNR Tracker App to scan the wristbands of UMNRs when they board and after they are seated. This app enables efficient monitoring of their journey and serves as a valuable tool for parents and Flight Attendants.
  • Differentiate YPTA passengers: Remember that minors aged 15-17 travel as Young Passengers Traveling Alone (YPTA). They do not require special assistance from Flight Attendants but should be identified in the My Flight App for coordination with Airport Operations personnel, if needed.
  • Preferred seating and exceptions: UMNRs are typically assigned aisle seats in the last three rows of the United Economy cabin. However, be aware that some UMNRs may have different seating arrangements based on their status or special circumstances. Follow guidelines and seek approval for any exceptions.
  • Regular check-ins: Check on UMNRs periodically during the flight, ensuring their well-being and reinforcing safety measures. Remind them to remain seated until it's time to disembark or until they receive specific instructions.
  • Collaborate with fellow crew members: Coordinate with Flight Attendants seated near the boarding door to introduce UMNRs and ensure a smooth transition during boarding and disembarking. This helps prevent UMNRs from getting lost in the passenger flow.

As a reminder, in order to establish the policies and procedures for accepting children for travel, Inflight has developed the CARE acronym as a reminder of our responsibilities and a guide to fulfilling them. CARE stands for Communicate, Accommodate, Remind, and Escort, outlining the key aspects to ensure a successful experience for UMNRs. Additionally, the My Flight App provides specific information about UMNRs on each flight, helping us meet these expectations.
