United Union Coalition Opposes Proposed Legislation to Increase Tax Rate on Jet Fuel in New Jersey

This week, AFA-CWA, ALPA, IBT, IAM and PAFCA) joined together to express our collective opposition to any legislation that would increase the effective tax rate on jet fuel in New Jersey.  This coalition of Union leaders, representing nearly 73,000 employees at United of which 13,000 are employees at Newark Liberty Airport; sent a joint letter opposing jet fuel tax hikes to Speaker Craig Coughlin of the New Jersey Assembly.

“Commercial aviation is a major driver of the economy in the state of New Jersey. Anything that will make New Jersey less competitive will likely have the effect of reducing not only growth of our airline in our state but also the number of employees hired.”

“The members we represent depend on the continued robust growth of the airline industry and we must necessarily stand in opposition to any state legislation that makes it more challenging for our company to support good-paying, high skilled jobs at and around the Newark airport. For this reason, we urge you to reject any increase in the jet fuel tax,” said Ken Diaz, MEC President United AFA-CWA
