This week, United’s Senior Vice Presidents of Inflight and Airport Operations, John Slater & Jon Roitman, communicated to employees an amended customer photo & video policy.

Specifically, the company has stated that small cameras or mobile devices for photos and video are permitted on board the aircraft provided the purpose is to capture personal events with the following caveat. Any photographing or recording of other customers or crew that creates a safety or security risk or that interferes with crewmember duties is prohibited.

During the normal workday, the company wants all of us to know that we are in a public space and, by virtue of where we work, there should not be an expectation of privacy. Crewmembers will be captured on photographs and video in the normal course of our work. However, any customer creating a safety or security risk or whose actions prevent you from doing your job, should be handled according to standard operating procedures. If on the aircraft, be certain to advise the purser and the flight deck. If you have additional questions on this policy change, please direct those to your base supervisor for clarification.
